What's On at Galeri PETRONAS: Memory and the Malaysian Identity

Galeri PETRONAS at Ombak KLCC is open as a preview, not as the full museum. Oriental Daily sent a photographer through the ground floor at the end of August. What they found is more specific than the relocation headlines: a mini exhibition called Memory and the Malaysian Identity, a six-panel AR walk called The Blueprint in Motion, and a digital wall where you can put your own drawing on an LED screen. The full collection across seven zones is still scheduled for 2027.

Memory and the Malaysian Identity mini exhibition at Galeri PETRONAS, Ombak KLCC

Memory and the Malaysian Identity

The mini show pulls paintings and sculpture from two holdings: the PETRONAS Art Collection and The AFK Collection. Oriental Daily describes the theme as memory, culture and identity as Malaysian artists have drawn them, not a greatest-hits tour of the old Suria KLCC rooms. The First Glimpse page on galeripetronas.com frames the same visit as three lenses, Institutional, Interpersonal and Respirational, which is gallery language for look at the institution, look at each other, look at a space that is still being built. The art on the wall is the reason to go. The three lenses are the wall text.

Admission to The First Glimpse is free. No timeslot. Walk in. That is the official FAQ, and it still holds in September. You do not need the RM55 permanent-exhibition ticket that will apply when the rest of the building opens.

The Blueprint in Motion, and the hours trap

The Blueprint in Motion is six stylised spatial compositions of the future galleries. Scan the QR codes on the panels for augmented-reality views of how the rooms are supposed to look once Galeri PETRONAS occupies its full 126,356 sq ft. TheSmartLocal saw the same AR panels on opening day, 21 August. Oriental Daily's visit a week later is the confirmation they are still the interactive piece, not a one-day stunt.

Hours are the fact most round-ups get wrong. The gallery's own visit page: Tuesday to Friday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM, closed Mondays and selected public holidays, last entry 30 minutes before close. Oriental Daily printed 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, which is Ombak's mall clock. If you finish Pokémon shopping at 8pm, you will be looking at a closed gallery door. Last entry on a weekday is 5:30 PM. The café is listed as coming soon. The shop is open enough to browse.

Lots, and how this sits in the mall

Official address lines are Lot G-19, Lot 3-19 and Lot 4-13, Plaza Ombak KLCC, 20 Persiaran KLCC. The preview you can walk today is the ground floor. Upper gallery floors are still a construction story. Malay Mail put mall occupancy at about 30 percent at the 28 August official opening. The gallery is the one tenant that already feels finished in its preview slice, which is why it is the indoor plan when the concourse is a festival and Level 3 is a merch queue.

Persiaran KLCC MRT (PY21) is the direct underground walk. Valet and four basement levels, about 450 bays, sit under the mall. We wrote the relocation story when First Glimpse opened. This page is the exhibition list and the clock. If those two pages feel similar, use this one to decide whether to come on a Monday. You should not.
